The Surroundings
A Pontenova
It was divided into two municipalities: Vilaoudriz and Vilameá, both separated by the Eo River.
On the right bank of the Eo River were the iron mines, while on the left bank stood the miners’ housing. It was with the construction of the railway station and the start of passenger transport that the activity of both municipalities began to concentrate in the current urban center, which over the years led to the merger of both into a single municipality: A Pontenova.
A Pontenova
Origin and Municipal Consolidation
The exploitation of the iron mines in Vilaoudriz (right bank of the Eo River) led to the formation of the urban center and the development of miners’ housing on the left bank. This process eventually resulted in the merger of the former municipalities of Vilaoudriz and Vilameá into the single municipality of A Pontenova, following the construction of the railway station and the launch of passenger transport.
Greenway of A Pontenova
Rehabilitation of the former narrow-gauge railway line between Villaodrid and Santirso (1901–1964) as an 11 km cycling and walking trail, equipped with interpretive panels that explain the region’s mining history and enrich the visitor experience.
In Situ Industrial Heritage
Conservation of ceramic calcination kilns, the engine room, and compressors—key points along guided tours that showcase the process of phosphorus removal and the improvement of the iron content in the ore.
