Religious and Civil Architecture
The large number of religious architectural examples spread across the territory of A Pontenova is truly unique.
In addition to the 11 parish churches, the challenging terrain and, consequently, the historical isolation of its villages and hamlets encouraged the proliferation of numerous small chapels and hermitages.
Regarding civil architecture, there are three main determining factors that shaped the popular architecture characterizing this area: the climatic conditions, marked by high rainfall; the available resources and materials; and finally, the construction methods and knowledge, as most houses were built by the residents themselves.
These constructions, based on rational architecture, are mainly characterized by their simplicity, sturdiness, and functionality. In addition to these more humble traditional homes, manor houses—such as the Pazo de Vilaxe, also known as Pazo de Trelles or Pimentel—and ancestral houses like Casa de Vilar, Casa de Cancio, Casa de Solar, Casa de Salmeán, among others, were also built.
