Hiking

Each itinerary is designed to offer a unique experience in the heart of nature.

In addition to enjoying spectacular panoramic views, our routes invite you to discover local traditions: the Ruta do Muiñeiro Namorado tells ancient legends, while the Ruta de As Reigadas follows fishermen’s paths along the river. Our team is available at the A Pontenova Tourist Office to assist you in choosing the route, providing you with office hours, and offering detailed maps.

Immerse yourself in the natural and historical wealth of A Pontenova and plan your next hiking adventure with us.

Ruta de As Reigadas

The Ruta de As Reigadas offers a linear route that runs along old fishermen’s paths within the Río Eo, Oscos e Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve and the Carballido SCI, following the course of the Reigadas River and its tributaries until it enters the Fraga de As Reigadas, one of the best-preserved Atlantic forests in Europe, where oak and chestnut trees dominate, and unique species such as mountain elm, yew, and rowan can be found. The route culminates at the historic Ferrería de Bogo – also known as Ferrería de Vilaboa – founded in 1534 by the nobleman Pedro de Miranda. This ethnographic site includes a small reservoir with a waterfall, the feeding channel for the waterwheel, the forge with a hammer and bellows, and a small hydroelectric power station.

Ruta da Férrea

The Ruta da Férrea is the shortest of the hiking routes in A Pontenova and leads directly to the A Férrea waterfall, located in the Muradal forest, just a short distance from the town center. This waterfall, fed by the stream of the same name, consists of two drops of approximately 7–8 meters and can be accessed by car, reaching as close as 300 meters from the second drop, which makes it easy to access the lower part without difficulty. To enjoy the view from the top, the route invites visitors to cross a wooden bridge over the stream and ascend a zigzag path — with an included wooden staircase — that passes the ruins of the old Muiño do Muradoiro and follows the canal that supplied the mill. In just over one kilometer, this trail offers a brief yet intense experience in an environment of great natural and historical value.

Ruta do Ferrocarril

The Ruta do Ferrocarril follows the old railway line that once connected the iron mines of Villaodriz (now A Pontenova) with the Porto Estreito loading dock in the Ribadeo estuary. Of the original 33 km, approximately 12 km have been rehabilitated as a greenway, running between the Villaodrid station (now the Tourist Office) and San Tirso (now a private residence). With a total elevation gain of only 20 meters over more than 12 km, its nearly flat profile makes it an accessible and safe experience for pedestrians and cyclists of all levels.

Ruta dos Fornos

The Ruta dos Fornos offers a short, circular route integrated into the Ruta das Minas, which enhances access to industrial heritage by connecting two sets of iron calcination furnaces from the Villaodrid Mining Company, used to remove phosphorus from the extracted minerals. Along the way, visitors can explore historic railway facilities (the station, the warehouses, and loading hoppers), the pillars of the old aerial tramway, and mining tunnels, ensuring an immersive experience in A Pontenova’s mining legacy without logistical or technical complexity.

Ruta das Minas

The Ruta das Minas is a circular route that, in addition to incorporating all the elements of the Ruta dos Fornos, explores the galleries of the Vieiro and Eneas mines of the Villaodrid group, as well as the Consuelo and Boulloso mines of the Boulloso group, offering a complete immersion into the local industrial heritage. Along its path, which runs parallel to the course of the Turía River, the trail allows visitors to discover the Pacios chapel (dedicated to Saint Lawrence), the Marian Sanctuary of Santa María de Conforto — whose construction began in 1662 — and the urban centers of Pacios, Conforto, San Mamede, and Boulloso, harmoniously combining natural, historical, and scenic values in an accessible and enriching journey.

Ruta da Seimeira

The Ruta da Seimeira starts from the village of Vilarxubín, about 15 km from A Pontenova, and crosses the forests of Sanxés and Teixido before returning to Vilarxubín itself, becoming one of the most ethnographically significant itineraries due to the excellent state of preservation of its villages and forests. Additionally, small detours provide access to the viewpoints of Pena do Castelo and Pena de Neira, from where expansive panoramas can be enjoyed, encompassing the forests of Sanxés, Teixido, As Reigadas, and Carballido.

La Ruta do Muiñeiro Namorado

The Ruta do Muiñeiro Namorado offers an immersive experience combining history and nature: it recreates the story of a young miller from the 20th century who, in love with a visitor from Neguri, had a clandestine romance by the O Cairo stream and embarked on a risky journey as a stowaway to Mar del Plata, the conclusion of which remains shrouded in mystery or legend. The route begins at the mouth of the stream where it meets the Eo River and consists of a 2.4 km linear section with a gentle slope, passing by several historic mills, and an optional 3.3 km loop with a greater incline, crossing the village of Figueirúa and allowing views of the entrance to the old O Cairo mine, thus combining industrial heritage and river landscapes in a modular and accessible itinerary.
